Green roof barn providing wildlife habitat in Essex UK

This new featured video is of a green roof barn in Essex. The ‘two roofs’ design provides meaningful habitat on the green roofs. Firstly, there is a good green roof designed for dry grassland species. A second water roof retains more rain water thus creating an ephemeral wetland green roof.

Green roof barn designed for nature

The green roof barn built in Norsey Wood, a Local Nature Reserve and SSSI, in Essex this summer takes a sustainable approach to building. The design used local wood to create the bee hotels found within the structure. Furthermore, the plinth foundations are external, in the form of pads, to protect what is an important local archaeological site.

The roof was constructed by the Grass Roof Company.

In addition to building green roofs, GRC’s John Little is also co-author of the online Small Scale Green Roof Guide.
