A Do It Yourself Guide for the amateur, small scale building / landscaping contractor, communities groups and all who want to enliven roofs with soils and plants.
John Little of The Grassroof Company and Dusty Gedge of Livingroofs have joined forces to provide a practical guide to creating small scale green roofs.
This guide is a response to the numerous emails and phone calls that we have had over the last few years, with questions on how the average person can create a green roof, similar to those in the photographs on our websites.
Download & purchase details are towards bottom of this page.
The Guide gives details of;
- A choice of different green solutions,
- how to convert a shed so it can have a green roof,
- how to build a small scale green roof on a new bespoke building,
- details of the frame and layers to be used,
- suggestions for growing mediums,
- and the type of plants to use,
- material suppliers.

The Guide includes;
- Diagrams to aid construction,
- pictures,
- and step by step instructions.
The guide is to help the DIY enthusiast or for people to give to a small scale building contractor to realise their green roof aspirations.

We have both been involved with and built numerous green roofs. However, no guide can be definitive and we want the guide to be a living document. We will therefore also be looking for pictures and details of green roofs that are constructed using the guide so that we can integrate these into updates of the guide. All too often green roof information can be about the big installations on commercial properties. We hope to develop an online community where sharing and inspiration can lead to practical innovation in the small scale too.
