STUDY OF GREEN ROOFS – how roof design can maximise biodiversity in an urban environment Dr G.Kadas, UCL London. 2002
An MSC project undertaken in UCL, this study of Spiders on green roofs and brownfield sites was the first of its kind in the UK. It aimed to establish design criteria for green roofs that may well be used as mitigation for the loss of brownfield habitat.

'QUANTIFYING THE SOIL COMMUNITY IN GREEN ROOFS' - A three year Phd studentship is just starting [2009] at Royal Holloway, University of London.
The project is funded by the Natural Environment Research Council, under the supervision of Prof Alan Gange. It is entitled 'Quantifying the soil community in green roofs'. The aims of the project are to identify what sort of a food web exists in green roofs and whether this can be manipulated to encourage sustainable plant growth on a roof. Soil invertebrates and microbes will be recorded and identified. Various microbial products will be applied to some roofs, to see if these can enhance colonisation by plant species and whether plant growth is affected. The student employed on the project is Miss Heather Rumble. The project is a collaborative one with Symbio Ltd and the Soil Food Web Lab Inc.
