Greece is an interesting country when it comes to roof and wall greening. Inadvertent and deliberate building greening is as old as the hills in Greece. If you go to any Greek village you will see bouganvilia and vines used for summer shading in many of the buildings.
Conventional green roof technology, as practiced in more economically advanced nations like Switzerland, Austria and Germany, is at an embryonic stage in Greece. A team of activists, known as www.oikosteges.gr, set about solving technical and viability issues in 2000 and developed a viable method for designed, deliberate greening of buildings after 6 years research and trials.

The team then established a Cause known as Prasines Steges Ellados (Green Roofs Greece) which now boasts a membership of over 21 000. A daughter group called Prasines Steges se Kathe Ktirio (Green Roofs for every building) which boasts a membership of over 11, 000 was also brought into the fold to promote, lobby and disseminate information regarding the technology. The group has become a legal entity, known as Green Roofs Greece, and has been a member of the European Federation of Green Roof Associations - EFB - in 2009.
Green Roofs Greece is also along with Livingroofs.org, Scandinavian Green Roof Association, the EFB, and the Polish Green Roof Association a founder member of Green Roofs Europe cause on facebook
