The new Sharrow School is an urban school that has amalgamated an infant and junior school, providing over 500 places for children from birth to 11 years old. |
|
Reason for Green Roof |
Due to the minimal space that surrounded the school, part of the brief was to provide a three levell green roof creating a play area, outdoor classroom and rooftop nature reserve. The school openly encourages flexibility within teaching areas and styles. The reconstructed wildlife meadow on the uppermost roof area, which is utilised as a teaching terrace, gives children the opportunity to learn about their local plants and animals firsthand, turning what could have been a concrete classroom into a living lesson. |

Comments |
Sharrows school is a building that has brought nature into an urban area, giving its pupils the chance to appreciate and learn about the environment firsthand. With webcams set within the green roofs, the children are able to observe the wildlife and create informative reports about their local flora and fauna. Scala, a collaborative organisation of public sector architects and related professionals voted sharrows school as civic building of the year, 2009 |
