Company Background

Sky Garden Greenroofs is the UK's leading independent provider of living roofs and walls and has become a pre-eminent exponent in the Greenroof / Biodiverse roof sector. Its unrivalled expertise and experience in bio-diversification and habitat creation has led to significant expansion in the last 12 months.

The living/green roofs market is growing rapidly and market research (**) indicates that by 2011 Greenroofs will become a £100 million turnover business in the UK alone.

The potential is massive with estimates indicating that in four areas of central London alone over 3 million m2 of roof space could be greened, offering potential energy saving of 19,200MWh per year, equivalent to 8,256 CO2 e tonnes, and 80,000 m3 of rainwater stored at roof level or equivalent to 35 Olympic swimming pools.

This burgeoning growth is now being seen across all business sectors, driven by local authorities and architects who are increasingly insisting on building technologies that conform to the contemporary standards.

The growth in market demand has already started to impact on Sky Garden Greenroofs which has doubled in size since 2007 with further significant growth already coming through the pipeline. Many organisations have taken advantage of the benefits of green roofs and chosen Sky Garden Greenroofs as their preferred contractor on major projects, including:

  • The first Bio-diverse roof – Tesco;
  • One of the largest Greenroofs in the UK - Adnams Brewery;
  • The largest Greenwall screen - Millennium Square, Greenwich.

Sky Garden Greenroofs was formed in April 2007 in order to capitalise on the fast expanding market and to ensure access to significant resources, but its experience in the industry dates back to 1998 under the banner of Greenfix Ltd. The company became the market leader in the green landscaping and ground rehabilitation sector specialising in the use of bio-degradable geotextiles for erosion control as well as pioneering the use of vegetation as an engineering tool. Activities included significant civil engineering projects as well as development and manufacture of products and the design and installation of natural landscape and biodiversity systems across the U.K. A natural progression led the company into the Green roofing market where Mike Cottage - Sky Garden Greenroofs founding director - became one of the leading experts in this field.
