Intensive roof garden systems offer greater diversity of planting options, and whilst intensive systems are primarily constructed from a selection of standard components, each system is individually designed for the project to be covered.

Biodiversity roofs are another form of extensive green roof [ie. low maintenance] that make use of recycled materials [eg. crushed brick, crushed concrete etc] in the growing medium. This type of green roof [sometimes referred to as a brown roof] is intended to create a natural wasteland and can be seeded initially with selected species to create some growth.
